NATURE'S PROSTATE HEALER: MY MOST GRATEFUL PATIENT EVER
When I was a fourth-year medical student, I spent time doing rotations in various hospital departments. One evening, I was called to the emergency room to admit a patient complaining of severe abdominal pain to the surgical care unit. The suspicion was that he either had a kidney stone or an inflamed appendix. When I walked in the room, the patient was lying restless on a gurney, writhing from side to side, in complete agony. However, his vital signs-heart rate, temperature, and blood pressure-were relatively normal. During the routine taking of the simple medical history, I determined that he had been suffering from symptoms of BPH. In fact, the symptoms had gotten progressively worse over the past few days.
"When did you last visit the bathroom?" I inquired.
"Last night... at 9 PM" he replied, while continuing to twist in agony.
"That's more than 22 hours ago," I said, shocked.
"Yea ... aaah ... for the past few days my stream has been getting weaker ... aaah ... weaker .. . and then it suddenly stopped."
I tapped with the tip of my finger on his lower abdomen. It was obvious that it was swollen and filled with liquid. I asked the nurse to bring me a Foley catheter. I numbed the opening of his urethra and gradually inserted the catheter into it, inch by inch. About eight inches later, there was some resistance. I pushed a little harder ... and bingo. Urine started coming through the catheter. Within a few minutes, a quart flushed out of his bladder.
"You are great! GREAT! GREAT!" he shouted. I was sure everyone in the adjoining rooms heard him. One of the nurses poked her head through the curtain to see what was going on. He continued, "Next to my wedding day, this is the happiest day of my life!!" After a short pause, and after more urine had come out, he corrected himself. "I take that back. This is THE happiest day of my life!"
The young take for granted that all bodily functions will forever continue working normally. It's only when something starts malfunctioning that attention is paid to the body. I often try to remind myself to be thankful every day that I have my health and am able to enjoy the simple things in life: chewing food and enjoying its taste, walking without any pain, and sleeping without aches.
